Currently, I am working towards a certification in Play Therapy with the Canadian Association of Child and Play Therapy. In my work I provide systemic assessments that look at the client’s life as a whole and collaborate with both children, youth, parents and schools to find the best plan of treatment for the client. Through training and client relationships, I have gained a deep understanding of how to work with a range of presenting challenges with compassion in order to build stronger, more attuned bonds to self and others.

2019 could really be your year! Where things stand now, the life you thought you'd have at this stage feels like a pipe dream. You're pretty sure everyone thinks you've got it all together. It looks that way from the outside, but you know you don't feel so great on the inside. Some days you feel uncertain and second-guess yourself, and most days you don't have enough energy to get everything done, and you have a lot to do! Is this all your life is ever going to be?
It doesn't have to be. So, if you've had enough of the negative voices in your head and you have zero interest in having another year go by where you're not where you think you should be in life, I can help! If you're ready to feel happier, more confident and relaxed, therapy can offer you the tools and strategies to get back on track.
If you're ready to feel as cool as cucumber, "breezy" ('Friends' anyone?!... or is it just me), letting stuff roll off your back like so many others seem to do, I'd be happy to work with you. For more information visit my website at (www.SusanBlackburn.com) and send an email or call to book an appointment to get started.

Human beings present a fascinating patchwork of personality traits, personal histories, and physical features. We’re complex, diverse, and captivating.
As a trained psychotherapist, I have the opportunity to glimpse the unique inner workings of the mind. I’ve connected with people from various backgrounds on a deep level, and that has defined my approach to social work: I look at each person in their entirety. I recognize that family, financial, and physical backgrounds impact the formation of our personalities, and therefore must be considered when implementing a treatment plan.
I have received extensive training and work experience, with Sensorimotor Trauma Psychotherapy, EMDR, Mindfulness informed interventions, and couples counselling,
While I'm very passionate about the body/mind connection, I believe that no two clients are alike. It is therefore important to employ the appropriate interventions on an individualized, case by case basis.
I consider myself an empathetic, balanced, and professional clinican. I utilize a number of modalities to help my clients overcome issues such as trauma, depression, anxiety, interpersonal difficulties, self esteem, chronic pain and familial difficulties.
I consider it exceptionally rewarding when my patients can set and achieve realistic short-term goals and improve their daily functioning.
I offer all first time clients a 30 min consultation free of charge.

I believe that we all need support when presented with struggles. I am driven to help people optimize their resilience and make lasting changes in their lives, harnessing their strengths to increasing overall wellness.
My interest in psychology and psychotherapy began in 2003 when I studied social anthropology at Dalhousie University. In learning about human behavior, psychology and the ways in which people relate to and organize themselves culturally and socially I was inspired to utilize this knowledge through a helping profession. I was struck by the universal human experience of needing to make and foster meaningful connections with others, be a part of a community, feel valued, loved and empowered. I believe that everyone has the capacity to optimize their resiliency. I also know that we all need support at times in our lives to help us mobilize our resilience and grow as we navigate the struggles we endure.
I began my career in the community, advocating for anti-poverty initiatives and raising communal awareness through collective organization. My journey brought me to individual psychotherapy as I worked with youth in the Toronto District School Board, with community medical clinics and with individuals internationally through employee assistance programs.
My passion lies in seeing my client’s discover and gain mastery in their strengths and find empowering, sustainable strategies to coping with life’s challenges.

Hello. I’m happy to see that you’ve made it - if you’re here, you’re searching for something to help improve your life. An indication of your readiness to confront the challenges facing you, and the belief that change is possible is a beautiful place to begin.
As a therapist, I welcome diversity of all kinds, and prize inclusivity of abilities, races, cultures, sexualities, genders, religions, ages, body sizes, and political values.
My approach to therapy focuses on delving into underlying issues, rather than just addressing symptoms, to support sustained growth and healing. Our work begins with a warm, supportive and non-judgmental environment. My goal is to understand your experience as accurately and empathically as possible. I then draw from a variety of models and techniques. These range from a focus on our relationship as a microcosm to understand relational patterns that exist outside the therapy room, to a deep interest in your dreams to understand what your unconscious might be communicating, to an understanding of coping mechanisms and how they once served you, to techniques that teach you how to skillfully navigating challenging thoughts and emotions while living a life in line with your values. I work from this range because I don’t believe that one approach is sufficient to address your unique needs.
I have completed a Master’s in Counselling Psychology from the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies for Studies in Education. I have also volunteered at the Distress Centres of Greater Toronto as a crisis worker on their distress lines, and as a grief counsellor for folks who lost someone to suicide or homicide. In addition to my training and therapy work experiences, I draw upon my life experiences as a filmmaker and a father.
My areas of practice include anxiety, depression, artists and artistic practice, masculinity issues, grief and traumatic loss, life transitions, work challenges, relationship issues, existential distress, spiritual exploration, and self and identity exploration.
If what you read here resonates with you, consider checking out my website or reaching out for a free 30-minute consultation. Regardless, I hope that you find the support and guidance you need on your journey towards healing and growth.

Harsh inner critic? Stuck in your feels? Burdened by people's expectations? Struggling with anger? I'll help you make sense of what’s going on, resolve underlying issues, and find alignment. I can help you get your mojo back. Sort through the overwhelming stuff. Make sense of the confusing stuff. And if we need to go deeper and work through some old hurts, we can do that too. You'll learn how to identify and disrupt negative patterns and create new and meaningful ways of being present in your life. You'll find me relatable, honest, empathic, and easy to talk to. You can heal from the past, manage stress, and thrive in life.
It may surprise you how easily old patterns can change when we create the conditions for new, healthy patterns to emerge. Old wounds often show up as anxiety, depression, anger, relationship conflict, health problems, out-of-control urges, low self-esteem, fear, and other common issues. You can heal from the past, get unstuck, and live wholeheartedly.
A typical session with me usually includes meaningful conversation and an experiential activity designed so you can feel the inner shift taking place. To learn more about my approach, the issues I can help with, and the techniques I use, have a look at my website or call me to arrange your free consultation. Evening and weekend appointments are available.

I am a Registered Social Worker with over 15 years of counselling and psychotherapy experience. I have worked in numerous settings ranging from hospitals, community & not-for-profit organizations, government, the private sector and on interdisciplinary teams. I have experience in the realms of mental health prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. I also have clinical social work experience in tertiary mental health hospital settings, such as the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), as well as in acute care/general hospital; where I worked as a social worker in the outpatient mental health and inpatient psychiatric units at Michael Garron Hospital (formerly Toronto East General Hospital).
My clinical skills include counselling and psychotherapy, assessment, consultation, provision of evidence-based treatment interventions, group therapy and facilitation, resource navigation, discharge planning, program development as well as crisis intervention. In addition to social work and psychotherapy, I have several years of work experience in the fields of employment counselling and vocational rehabilitation; as a result, I also provide career and employment counselling, job coaching & consultation and vocational rehabilitation services.
As an advocate, social worker and therapist, I care about dismantling stigma about mental health and promoting a culture of help seeking for men, women, individuals, families, and communities. Just like one goes to their family physician, dentist, or cardiologist, there should be no shame or embarrassment if one is going to a therapy or psychiatry appointment. Mental health (including addiction and trauma) does not just affect the individual, but has a profound impact on a person's family, social group, and on future generations. Just like physical health, we all have mental health and it is something that is 'fluid' and 'changes overtime'. Our life experiences, choices, genes, temperaments, cultural upbringing & values, relationships, as well as, environments all influence mental health.
Therapy is a unique and dynamic process, whereby attentively listening to you explore yourself, in a non-intrusive space, facilitates a powerful phenomenon that organically unravels and helps you rework, rewire, repair, and more deeply understand yourself. Also, as humans, we all have ‘blind-spots’ which we cannot see, so sometimes talking to a mental health professional who has 'trained eyes and ears' can help us become more aware of our blind-spots.
I recognize that seeking support or taking the step to speak to someone can be a frightening and intimidating process. I want to assure you that I will meet you where you are at; in a safe, kind, genuine, and non-judgmental space. Support can mean many things; including, attentively listening to you and creating a safe space for you to process your thoughts, feelings, experiences & beliefs; answering a question; being present and completely immersed in your world, with you, during a session; making you feel heard, validated and valued; providing you with some resources (skills or strategies); or, just knowing that someone is there for you.
The therapeutic journey is precious, so it is essential that you have a good rapport, trust and a positive feeling about the person that you choose to work with. ~*Please feel free to contact me by phone (647-372-1466), email (martasmsw@gmail.com), or, on this platform, if you would like to schedule a free, confidential, 30 minute consultation, or have any questions. Looking forward to connecting with you! *~

I recognize that sometimes what we truly need is the space to express ourselves, our emotions and our fears, but this can be both scary and vulnerable. My aim is to create a safe and secure space where we can openly confront fears together and then learn new ways to overcome them. I have an extensive experience with anxiety and depression, bereavement and stress management and specialize with self-esteem work, life transitions and lack of motivation. I have worked in and am comfortable with both short and long-term counselling in both private work and within a group setting.
Using motivational dialogue as well as challenging one's current beliefs, we can work together to address any number of changes, concerns or fears that you may bring with you.
While my main therapeutic technique is rooted in Person-Centred or Rogerian Therapy, I have also received certification in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy. In concordance with the ethical requirements of practice of the CCPA and the CRPO, I continue to expand my skills and therapeutic techniques.

Life seems made up of endless challenges for children, youth and young adults these days. Issues that previous generations didn't even need to think about are now part of every day life for younger generations - cyberbullying, worries about school safety, increased rates of mental health struggles, societal conversations about gender and sexuality... On top of that are the issues that have plagued youth for generations - stress, homework, dating, friends, future planning, and numerous other issues to wade through day by day.
Despite all these challenges, I truly believe that every individual has the innate ability to cope with challenges in their lives. Sometimes it's hard to draw out those abilities on our own when we need them, and that's where I come in.
Whether you are a post-secondary student, the parent to a child, or a youth yourself, I'm here to support you. And all of that starts with truly hearing you, hearing your needs and your stresses and your passions. From that point we can work together towards creating more stability, support and progress in your life.

Having a lifelong interest in psychotherapy and emotional healing and growth, I shifted my career 15 years ago and trained as a psychodynamic psychotherapist with the Ontario Psychotherapy and Counselling Training Program in Toronto. Since establishing my practice I have continued to receive additional training in trauma, child development, interpersonal psychotherapy and mindfulness.
Prior to this life change, I worked for over 20 years in television documentary production as a writer, story researcher and story editor. Recognition and respect for the transformative power of telling our stories is the thread that connects my two careers.

I work with folks going through life transitions, having difficulty in relationships, dealing with low self-esteem, or experiencing depression or anxiety. The folks I work with often find that patterns or feelings from their past are coming into their present in ways that no longer serve them.
Since we often experience hurt and harm in the context of relationships, we can also experience healing in the context of relationships. You can bring whatever you need or want to talk about to session and we will work together to make sense of what is happening for you, what patterns to let go of, and how to feel whole.
I understand that larger systems impact how folks are able to navigate their relationships with themself and others. I understand the necessity of contextualizing client experiences within those systems and I strive to practice therapy in an anti-oppressive and anti-racist way.

*Covid-19: Waitlist* I work with individuals experiencing feelings of low self-esteem and anxiety. Do you ever feel unappreciated or stuck? As though no matter how hard you try you are never enough? In today’s fast paced world, it can be so hard to find a safe space to open up and let those emotions go. If life is magnifying the negative thoughts in your head, I can help you find your voice, and together we can discover your true self-worth. Everyone deserves to feel appreciated and accepted.
My therapeutic approach is truly about warmth, inclusivity and acceptance. I draw upon common yet effective Humanistic and Holistic treatments such as CBT, IFS, and Narrative & Play Therapy (informed). You can expect challenging questions that allow you to confront and explore negative emotions, all within the safety of a professional.
My therapeutic skills focus on women and children facing relationship, family or self-esteem issues. I draw from the belief that emotional release, combined with inner growth, can lead to healing and the deep feeling of empowerment in your own skin. Empathy, compassion and a warm connection helps everyone feel valued and heard again.
