Therapy can be confusing, scary, painful, and frustrating, but it’s also magical and so necessary. I am deeply passionate about this work – about you and your process of sitting with and naming and feeling all that is painful and scary within you and around you. Moreover, I am passionate about seeing you stepping into your own power and resilience and beauty. In our sessions, I will support you to become curious about yourself. We will explore parts of your journey/psyche that have felt shamed, scared, abused, confused, and silenced and we will offer these parts lots of love and understanding, so you can feel clarity, relief, and congruence. I work in a gentle, honest, intuitive, and creative way, and I am comfortable with a range of emotions and experiences including grief, self-harm, suicidal ideation, anger, childhood abuse and psychosocial trauma (including war), post-immigration experiences, relationship difficulties, self-actualization, and self-esteem issues. My practice is trans, queer, fat and sex worker affirming, and I welcome those who want to explore their sexuality, gender identity, and alternative relationship styles. I am a Registered Psychotherapist and a supervisor at the Distress Centre of Greater Toronto. The one thing life forgot to give us is a guidebook. Ever find yourself scrolling on Facebook or Instagram watching high school acquaintances post their job promotions or new engagements as you sit there comparing yourself? Ever think yourself into a frenzy as you try to figure out adult-ING hacks? Or maybe none of this sounds right and you’re here because sex isn’t what it’s been cracked up to be. Maybe you’re here because you want to reclaim your sexuality and discover new meanings of sex. That mythical “Life Guide Handbook” got lost in the mail a long time ago, but maybe you don't have to figure things out on your own anymore. I am a life transitions, new habits, anxiety, and sex therapy specialist. Together, we will look at your needs and the ways in which they are or aren't being fulfilled. You will leave each session with new skills or perspectives to apply in your life outside of session so that relationships with yourself, loved ones, and in the workplace can be improved. If you’re feeling ready to tackle these items or just want to get to my approach a little more, submit a request here on Therapy Owl. Let me join you on this journey to figure out life. I offer free 15-minute free consultations and am currently accepting new clients. As a Registered Social Worker, I am a reimbursable claim expense for most insurers.

Living is not easy. Living well is even more difficult. Finding safety, purpose and fulfilment may seem elusive. Many of us find ourselves entangled in the habitual patterns of the mind and heart. Repetitive mental and emotional habits can gain addictive power. This is because we may be compelled to keep doing them despite experiencing negative consequences. Once entrenched, these tendencies can make us feel stuck and in a chronic state of discontent. In my version of mindfulness-based therapy, which combines experiential and existentialist strategies, the aim is to disentangle from life-diminishing and self-limiting forces. I am trained in mindfulness and experiential therapeutic approaches. My passion is to assist in the process of the co-creation of who you feel you can and would like to become.

Transforming Emotions
Clinical Psychologist
I am passionate about assisting clients to transform their emotional experience. When our emotion systems go awry, it can be difficult or impossible to meet our needs. This often leads to pervasive discomfort including symptoms of anxiety, depression, and/or efforts to manage feelings through avoidance or distractions such as drinking, drug use, exercise, eating, and sex. I believe that emotions are most effectively changed by changing emotion with emotion. Emotion Focused Therapy combines empathy with evidence-based practices to assist clients in overcoming longstanding patterns of self-criticism underlying depression and anxiety, in letting go of challenging stuck feelings towards significant others in your life, and in seeking to heal from the impacts of trauma. Working in this way requires an openness to experiencing your inner world, and a motivation to approach and transform your emotion patterns.

You don't have to be alone in your struggle. It takes strength to seek support, and personal therapy can be an important part of self care. Whether you're feeling anxious, depressed, lonely, confused, angry, or overwhelmed, your feelings have value, and connecting to them can help. Our earliest attachments can have a profound impact on the emotions we allow or deny, and how we behave in future relationships. We all long for connection, yet we can both reach for, and push away, opportunities to get it. Together we can understand how this might be happening for you. As an attachment focused therapist, I will help you to understand your early childhood experiences and how these may have impacted your personality, your relationships, and your self worth. We will also explore how you feel about your emotions, with the goal of greater emotional freedom or control. As a therapist I am engaged, present and curious, and I strive to create a safe and non-judgemental space for my clients. Please visit my website to find out more and book a no charge consultation. I operate from a feminist, anti-racist and class conscious perspective with the goal of fostering agency, accountability and well being in individuals who want to be agents of change in their lives and in the world around them. I also strive to provide an outlet for the fear, sadness and rage that comes from bearing witness to and being the victim of systemic injustice and violence. I recognize that systemic issues will not be remedied through individual solutions, and make space for the contradictions that exist in this work. I offer a non-pathologizing approach to mental health that considers the individual, relational, material and systemic conditions of my clients lives. My goal, as a therapist, is to provide a space where healing, growth and connection can occur. I love working with clients who are seeking meaning in their lives, who want to act but don't know where to start.

I work from a model of health, balance and empathy by bringing into awareness the places where we get stuck and our unique ways of getting there. You know best when your patterns of coping are no longer working. A therapist's job is to support you in creating positive shifts in your life. This support may sometimes feel frustrating, especially when our familiar patterns of functioning are being challenged. I incorporate art, humour and paradox in sessions allowing for a creative, spontaneous exploration of your needs, contradictions and feelings and by providing a safe space where new possibilities and hope are possible. I work primarily with the Gestalt approach, which focuses on self-awareness, contact and the here and now. My style is attentive and responsive. You will get direct feedback from me in each meeting. I use a variety of therapeutic techniques including Psychodrama, Drawing and Mindfulness based interventions. I work with adults, couples, and adolescents on issues such as loss, conflict, chronic health problems, body and identity concerns, as well as blocks in creativity. I enjoy working with individuals in private practice, as well as facilitating workshops and support groups. I run regular, experiential workshops at the University of Toronto.

People come to therapy for many reasons, usually because they are not happy with something in their lives. My role as a therapist is to help facilitate a process that results ultimately in positive change. It is you, the client, who does the actual work, but I help to create an environment where that work is possible. I believe that people will naturally move towards wholeness given the right conditions and that they have the resources available to deal with the challenges life brings them. Part of what I do is listen deeply to what you are telling me. That can be healing in itself. From that listening I reflect back to you what I hear in perhaps new ways – you might recognize something in what I say that you didn’t fully realize before. Or you might clarify what I’ve fed back to you and that will deepen both our understandings of your experience. I also encourage you to stay with and experience your feelings as you touch on them in our sessions. Sometimes that will feel hard, but you will also experience relief as you allow your truth to emerge. As they say, “The truth will set you free.” It is not only insight and self-awareness that is liberating – the actual experience of being connected to your authentic self expands your capacity to relate to your life and those around you with increased fulfillment and satisfaction. The work we do together is about exploring and uncovering your feelings, thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes. Through that process, you will learn more about who you are and what your needs, fears, desires, and strengths are. With that knowledge you will be better able to act in your life in a way that brings about positive change. I believe that the relationship we have as therapist and client is the most important ingredient in creating an environment where you feel safe enough to do the work. To that end, as well as bringing my empathy, caring, respect, and sensitivity, to our relationship, I work as a team with you, collaborating on how you want to proceed every step of the way. I am a Registered Psychotherapist with a masters degree in counselling psychology and a bachelor degree in engineering. In addition to my private practice I’ve worked with clients in a rape crisis centre, an abortion clinic, a walk-in counselling clinic, a yoga community, and two post-secondary schools. With a background in yoga and meditation, I am interested in the intersection of eastern spirituality and western theories of psychological healing. Authors whose teachings reflect my working style include: Tara Brach, Jack Kornfield, Pema Chodron, Brene Brown, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Geneen Roth, Esther Perel, and Sue Johnson, to name a few. Some of the issues I’ve helped people work with include: relationship difficulties, stress, anxiety, depression, food issues, life transitions, addictions, self-esteem, sexual and physical abuse, grief and bereavement, illness, and spiritual growth. I see both individuals and couples. If you feel that any of what I’ve said resonates with you or intrigues you and you would like to explore further whether we would be a good fit, please contact me to set up a free half-hour consultation. My office is in the east end of Toronto near Pape and Danforth.

Tiffany Chinapen RP VIDEO THERAPY
Rosewater Art Psychotherapy Inc.
Art Psychotherapist
As a therapist, Tiffany values growth, resiliency and creativity and strives to support her clients with their inner growth, feeling grounded and reconnecting with themselves through the use of creative art-making. She believes everyone should be encouraged to have creative tools for self-reflection, self-regulating and self-expression. Her approach to understanding clients comes from an individual perspective informed by their social and cultural contexts. Tiffany works from a psychodynamic and reflexive point of view and incorporates a strength-based approach into her practice. Tiffany’s approach to therapy comes from combining two disciplines: art and psychology by using lines, colours, shapes, and symbolic imagery to create a helpful way to make sense of feelings that are difficult to talk about. People of all ages can benefit from art psychotherapy, and previous art-making experience is not required. Art therapy is a distinct discipline that combines the creative process and psychotherapy. Art making in a therapeutic setting is used as a way to understand who we are, express ourselves when words cannot, release stress and tension, and enhance life by creating something that did not exist before.

Psychotherapist and Couples Counsellor
35 years experience has taught me much about successful therapy. Being understood, whether as an individual or within a couple is critical; my job is to listen well while bringing you my knowledge about how people work and how change happens. You bring knowledge of your life and together we have a conversation about what might allow change to happen. Sometimes, old stories get in the way and revisiting them is necessary to remove obstacles to change. This can only happen when people feel safe. Creating that nurturing environment is also part of my job. While therapy can be difficult, it is also an exciting and rewarding process. My approach to individual and couples work integrates such frameworks as Emotionally Focused Therapy, mindfulness and CBT. I am also interested in understanding how our brains work and how that offers possibilities for change. I work within an anti-oppression framework understanding individuals and couples in the context of their power relationships. I am experienced in working with individuals and couples on issues related to emotional regulation, trauma, loss, chronic illness, and communication to name but a few. Although my practice is highly varied, I have worked with people from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans and HIV communities, providing individual and couples counselling.

Holding it Together
Neurodivergent Psychotherapy
We are inter-dependently connected, and yet there is dis-connection. Healing involves connecting with ourselves through each other, and connecting to each other through ourselves. Interpersonal harm, systemic barriers and institutional violence impact each and every one of us. My practice is rooted in de-pathologizing, neurodivergent-affirming, anti-oppressive, de-colonizing, class conscious, trauma-informed frameworks, and enriched by my lived experience as queer, trans, and neurodivergent.I focus on three inter-related areas: 1) Gender, Sexuality and Relationships 2) Neurodivergence 3) Creativity and Work/Life Balance. I offer CBT, DBT, Narrative, Psychodynamic, Relational, and Feminist therapy, as well as therapies designed to assist in healing from gender, sexuality, and autism conversion therapies. I offer complimentary 30 minute in person consultations to help us decide whether we would be a good fit for each other.

To suffer is human – but to grow and heal is also human. In life, you might experience stress, anxiety, self-criticism, anger, sleep problems, chronic pain and disability, difficult transitions or relationships, and other challenges. Sometimes, you might feel so stuck or overwhelmed that your usual coping tools are not quite enough. It can be helpful to seek support from a professional who empowers you to overcome life’s challenges by helping you tap into your inner resources and develop new ones. I am a therapist with years of experience offering such support. I have 8 years of experience in mental health. I work with adults (17+) with diverse backgrounds, identities, and concerns. I value culturally sensitive, anti-oppressive, accessible therapy; and I aim to provide a space of empathy, non-judgement, and unconditional positive regard. Drawing from Mindfulness, ACT, CBT, and other therapies, I support clients in changing how they relate to themselves and their experiences; modifying unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaving; increasing their understanding of their emotions; and acting in line with their values. I help individuals find self-compassion and inner peace in the present moment while facing hardships; and I endeavour to bring empathy, authenticity, insight, and calm into therapy and into clients’ lives.
