I have over 40 years experience, working with people of all ages, to find ways to solve problems that are getting in the way of them making the changes they hope for - to become the person they truly aspire to be. Change is always possible - even in a single conversation!
Although I specialize in counselling children, youth and young adults, I also have experience with older adults.
I have experience and training in a broad range of therapeutic techniques, which allows me to provide an integrated model of treatment - in collaboration with my clients, we explore which therapeutic techniques would provide the most relief and lead to the desired changes.
I offer a free, 30 minute consultation, so we can have a conversation about how we could work together so you can achieve the goals you desire.

Child and Family Therapist
My practice focuses primarily on supporting children, teens, families and young adults. Whether you or your child are struggling with anxiety, depression, ADHD or difficult life changes, I can help find solutions to the big feelings and tough moments.
Children are not islands and a caregiver's involvement is vital when supporting a child or youth struggling with mental health or behavioural difficulties. I work closely with caregivers to gain a better understanding of their child's mental health, how to respond to difficult behaviours and strengthen family relationships. Whatever you or your child are struggling with, my approach is flexible and tailored to meet each specific child and families' needs.
I am also passionate about working with young adults. Your 20s and 30s can be incredible times of growth, joy and change. However, they can also be fraught with anxiety and uncertainty. Whether you feel Iike life's passing you by or you're confused about what's coming next, we can work together to make sense of it all.

Sheri Betel MSW, RSW
Leaside Therapy Centre
Social Worker Psychotherapist
My name is Sheri Betel and I specialize in couple counselling and intimacy issues. With over 25 years experience I have developed a philosophy when it comes to psychotherapy. I am a strong believer that our childhood and early past are the blueprints to how our lives are structured now. While we may not be able to do much to change the past, understanding it better can help us figure out how to alter our current circumstances and even help predict our futures.

I work with folks going through life transitions, having difficulty in relationships, dealing with low self-esteem, or experiencing depression or anxiety. The folks I work with often find that patterns or feelings from their past are coming into their present in ways that no longer serve them.
Since we often experience hurt and harm in the context of relationships, we can also experience healing in the context of relationships. You can bring whatever you need or want to talk about to session and we will work together to make sense of what is happening for you, what patterns to let go of, and how to feel whole.
I understand that larger systems impact how folks are able to navigate their relationships with themself and others. I understand the necessity of contextualizing client experiences within those systems and I strive to practice therapy in an anti-oppressive and anti-racist way.

Life seems made up of endless challenges for children, youth and young adults these days. Issues that previous generations didn't even need to think about are now part of every day life for younger generations - cyberbullying, worries about school safety, increased rates of mental health struggles, societal conversations about gender and sexuality... On top of that are the issues that have plagued youth for generations - stress, homework, dating, friends, future planning, and numerous other issues to wade through day by day.
Despite all these challenges, I truly believe that every individual has the innate ability to cope with challenges in their lives. Sometimes it's hard to draw out those abilities on our own when we need them, and that's where I come in.
Whether you are a post-secondary student, the parent to a child, or a youth yourself, I'm here to support you. And all of that starts with truly hearing you, hearing your needs and your stresses and your passions. From that point we can work together towards creating more stability, support and progress in your life.

*Covid-19: Waitlist* I work with individuals experiencing feelings of low self-esteem and anxiety. Do you ever feel unappreciated or stuck? As though no matter how hard you try you are never enough? In today’s fast paced world, it can be so hard to find a safe space to open up and let those emotions go. If life is magnifying the negative thoughts in your head, I can help you find your voice, and together we can discover your true self-worth. Everyone deserves to feel appreciated and accepted.
My therapeutic approach is truly about warmth, inclusivity and acceptance. I draw upon common yet effective Humanistic and Holistic treatments such as CBT, IFS, and Narrative & Play Therapy (informed). You can expect challenging questions that allow you to confront and explore negative emotions, all within the safety of a professional.
My therapeutic skills focus on women and children facing relationship, family or self-esteem issues. I draw from the belief that emotional release, combined with inner growth, can lead to healing and the deep feeling of empowerment in your own skin. Empathy, compassion and a warm connection helps everyone feel valued and heard again.

Hello. I’m happy to see that you’ve made it - if you’re here, you’re searching for something to help improve your life. An indication of your readiness to confront the challenges facing you, and the belief that change is possible is a beautiful place to begin.
As a therapist, I welcome diversity of all kinds, and prize inclusivity of abilities, races, cultures, sexualities, genders, religions, ages, body sizes, and political values.
My approach to therapy focuses on delving into underlying issues, rather than just addressing symptoms, to support sustained growth and healing. Our work begins with a warm, supportive and non-judgmental environment. My goal is to understand your experience as accurately and empathically as possible. I then draw from a variety of models and techniques. These range from a focus on our relationship as a microcosm to understand relational patterns that exist outside the therapy room, to a deep interest in your dreams to understand what your unconscious might be communicating, to an understanding of coping mechanisms and how they once served you, to techniques that teach you how to skillfully navigating challenging thoughts and emotions while living a life in line with your values. I work from this range because I don’t believe that one approach is sufficient to address your unique needs.
I have completed a Master’s in Counselling Psychology from the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies for Studies in Education. I have also volunteered at the Distress Centres of Greater Toronto as a crisis worker on their distress lines, and as a grief counsellor for folks who lost someone to suicide or homicide. In addition to my training and therapy work experiences, I draw upon my life experiences as a filmmaker and a father.
My areas of practice include anxiety, depression, artists and artistic practice, masculinity issues, grief and traumatic loss, life transitions, work challenges, relationship issues, existential distress, spiritual exploration, and self and identity exploration.
If what you read here resonates with you, consider checking out my website or reaching out for a free 30-minute consultation. Regardless, I hope that you find the support and guidance you need on your journey towards healing and growth.
