Whether you're experiencing a high or a low in life, we all need time to reflect and process. Therapy offers us the opportunity to improve our sense of resilience and our overall quality of life. I would be happy to assist you if you are experiencing pregnancy or postpartum, parenting uncertainties, anxiety, depression, grief, stress, interpersonal conflict, or something else entirely. Therapy has something to offer everyone who comes openly and willingly.
I mostly provide services to individuals, namely adult women ages 20-40. My practice is 100% virtual. Whether you're looking for video sessions, phone appointments, e-mail exchanges, or instant messaging correspondences, there are many ways in which we can connect to help you get the help you are seeking.
It takes courage to check-in with yourself, and to allow someone else to join you in that process! You are the expert on your life, and the ultimate decision-maker. I am merely here to offer a listening ear and gentle guidance. I would be honoured to chat to see if we are a good fit for what you're looking for.

I believe I have been pointing towards therapeutic work throughout my life. Witnessing and supporting others through difficult experiences and transitions, particularly when pain, anguish, and sorrow are present, is familiar and meaningful work to me. These seasons of our lives can often feel isolating and disorienting and my work attempts to soften those edges by creating space safe enough to experience and make sense of overwhelming emotions in manageable ways.
Therapy is deeply personal work. Being entrusted to know the nuances and complexities that make someone who they are is a gift I hold with tremendous care and respect. Our work together will be intentional and oriented towards the specific concerns in your present life. While it will gently push up against your working edges and involve stretching emotionally this will happen in relationship with one another and we will only move at the speed of trust. Together we will gain a rich understanding of your internal world and our therapeutic work will reflect and centre the areas you wish to see changes in.
I am a registered member (qualifying) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario as well as hold membership with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. I have obtained my MEd (Counselling) from the University of Northern British Columbia and have training in Holistic Expressive Therapies as well as Indigenous Focusing-Oriented Therapy. I am particularly drawn towards work that includes grief, loss, family systems, childhood, life transitions, belonging, boundaries, shame, (in)fertility, pregnancy, parenthood, and trauma.
I am a white settler of Dutch and Irish descent and I exist in spaces with cis-hetero, thin, able-bodied, and neuro-typical privileges. I work from a feminist perspective and my therapeutic approach blends together narrative, attachment, polyvagal, DBT, and expressive theories. It is informed by my academic knowledge, personal and professional lived experiences, and continued learnings. I strive to consistently act in ways that are aligned with my own values around trauma-informed, justice-oriented, fat-positive, sex/gender/culture-affirming practices while acknowledging because of my own privileges and complicities this is a commitment to lifelong (un)learning. Creating affirming therapeutic experiences that are non-judgemental and non-pathologizing is central to all of my work; therapy that is collaborative and grounded in consent, choice, and autonomy. All of you is welcome here.

Matthias Barter is a passionate advocate for the idea that a person is more than the sum of what they are struggling with. His pursuit of a master’s degree in Counselling and Spirituality from St. Paul University helped to develop a special appreciation for the uniqueness of the journey each person undertakes. As a psychotherapist, Matthias believes strongly in providing a place of safety in which clients can begin to look at the areas of their life that they feel stuck in, while facilitating an exploration of where each client derives meaning in their lives. He has experience in treating anxiety, depression, relationship issues, loss, anger, and avoidance. Working primarily from an integrative lens, Matthias combines elements of Cognitive-Behavioural approaches, Client-Centered therapies, and a Psychodynamic emphasis on early life experiences. Life can be hard. Whether it is life transitions, stressors, illness, or any perceived limitation, we will all struggle, experience pain, sorrow, and discomfort. The question is, how do we support ourselves during difficult times? What type of relationship would we like to have with ourselves, others, and the world on the winding path of life? I believe psychotherapy connects us with our strengths, values, and compassion we need to live a more fulfilling, meaningful, and authentic life, despite obstacles we all encounter. It helps guide us toward approaching life with an open heart.
As a Registered Psychotherapist of Ontario with more than 16 years of experience working in mental health, I focus on the treatment of low self-esteem, relationship issues, life transitions, emotional difficulties, as well as relational and childhood trauma. My practice is rooted in humanistic, mindful self-compassion, and attachment-oriented approaches.
If you are looking to develop a kind, compassionate relationship with yourself, and a stronger ability to cope with life's adversities, I invite you to contact me by telephone or by e-mail. I would be honoured to become part of your journey toward meaningful change and well-being. I look forward to hearing from you.

Stuck in a bit of a rut? Maybe haven't been feeling like yourself for a while? Thinking about changing in your something but don't know what? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you are not alone. We are all human beings, and we all have it rough sometimes (and man, can it get rough!). I believe that we all have the tools we need to move in our desired direction - sometimes we just need a reminder that they are there, and sometimes we need a little help dusting them off.
I use techniques and concepts from established theories, but also I think there is a lot of power in just being a fellow human and being authentic. Sometimes that means hearing out that tough stuff, and sometimes that means sharing some laughs (Laughter can be the best medicine after all!).
My goal as a therapist is to provide a space for you to get what's bothering you out into the open so we can check things over together. Let's figure out where you want to go, and how we can get you there.

We are not broken, just stuck. Sometimes the way we cope with emotional wounds, anxieties, and fears may in fact be detrimental to us, leaving us trapped by the same patterns in life. I depart from an attachment and trauma-informed, strength-based perspective and place an emphasis on emotional regulation and experiential integration.
Perhaps you have a strong feeling that you are unworthy, that others will inevitably abandon you, your needs will never be met, or others cannot be trusted. Perhaps you even know this to be logically untrue, but cannot help experiencing this to be emotionally true. This is the result of developing an internal working model at a young age which then shapes your experience of the world.
In therapy, we uncover the unconscious and self-perpetuating internal working model and bring it to light. Once we gain understanding of how the model works, we can start to make space for change: think of it as updating an outdated program. We train the mind to be more flexible in processing information so we can stop reinforcing the old patterns of how we relate to self and others. Through the safety created in the therapeutic relationship, we unpack traumas from the past, learn to integrate our experiences so they are more congruent and containable, and find ways to reconnect with ourselves and others in a fulfilling way.
Finding the right therapist is important, as a strong therapeutic bond is essential for effective therapy. This process takes research, patience, and intuition. I encourage you to have a conversation with me over the phone if you are considering me as your therapist, as that will give us a sense of how well we work together.

I help young adults struggling with direction, confidence, and purpose, to recover their zest for life and feel deserving of happiness.
Are you finding that getting through the day and managing responsibilities, people, work, and emotions is just too much? Maybe you’re in a job that you dislike and are feeling stuck. Or maybe you’re near or out of school and feeling disillusioned with all the options and lack of options coming at you all at once. Perhaps you’re coming out of a relationship or just getting into one and feeling nervous. Maybe it’s your existing relationship that you’re feeling hopeless about, or having difficulty setting and maintaining boundaries. It could be that it all seems to be happening at the same time. I understand the burden of these situations and the heaviness they bring with them.
I believe we all have an innate ability and desire to realize our potential; that we have everything we need to be fulfilled, happy, and healthy inside each one of us. I want to remind you of your strengths and competencies, and invite new perspectives to help you connect with your innermost self, treat yourself and others with compassion, and approach life’s challenges with grace.
Humans are fascinating, different, and complex, and for that, I don’t believe therapy is one-size-fits-all. I am passionate about letting my clients be the experts on themselves. My job is to guide you where you can use your expertise of self in a way that brings you the direction, clarity, and peace you’ve been looking for. I’ll provide a comfortable space for you to talk about what’s on your mind and what you’ve been feeling. I can teach you techniques to connect to your body and relax your nervous system so you can feel relief from the heaviness of stress and emotional burdens, connect more presently with life, and experience life with more enthusiasm. I’ll invite you to think of your situations differently, explore your values and areas of life that bring you joy, build on your resilience in times of strife, and help you live with more passion and compassion for yourself and others. My practice uses an eclectic approach to ensure you’re receiving personalized care to best suit the needs and nuances of your specific situation.

Is there an aspect of your life that overwhelms you and leaves you feeling like you need help? Living life authentically often leads us to encounter these types of challenges. Sometimes we can trace the origin of our distress back to a particular event or experience such as a relationship or job dissatisfaction. Other times, the origins are more hidden and leave us scared and confused. The effect of this distress can take many forms, typically depression and anxiety. Talking openly in the safety and confidentiality of a therapeutic relationship can bring some relief.
Humans have evolved to be social beings. Psychotherapy is both a healthy way to express our humanity, and a social process that contributes to our health. I offer an empathic and non-judgmental attitude as a basis for forming a collaborative relationship with you. Within the context of this therapeutic alliance, you will have a confidential space to talk openly for 50 minutes. Simply expressing your suffering in a trusting relationship can lead to a healthy release of emotions. Sometimes the talk can be a creative way to bring meaning to your distress, making it more conscious, manageable, and in some cases, minimal.
Research has shown that most psychotherapy approaches share certain therapeutic ingredients such as establishing a relationship, setting treatment goals, and enhancing positive expectations. These common factors are what lead to therapeutic change. The therapy I provide can help you experience life more deeply, enjoy more satisfying relationships, resolve painful conflicts, and better integrate all parts of your personality.
