Registered Psychotherapist
Steph here - I'm passionate about fostering healing and growth through empathetic and empowering therapy sessions with everyone I work with. Grounded in person-centered therapy, I prioritize creating a safe and nurturing environment where individuals, including children, teens, and young adults, along with their parents, feel heard and valued. I also draw upon a range of evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and psychoeducation, to address diverse therapeutic needs effectively. With a focus on tailoring support to each client’s unique journey, I collaborate closely with clients and their families to navigate life’s challenges and promote well-being.
I earned my Honours B.Sc. in Psychology and my Master of Education in Counselling Psychology from the University of Ottawa. I am also active in research at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) Research Institute on mental health projects involving children and youth. This allows me to combine my academic and research background with a compassionate understanding of my clients’ needs. With dedication and empathy, I help clients find positive change and meaningful self-discovery.

Dr. Judy Makinen, C.Psych. VIDEO THERAPY
SISU Psychological & Counselling Services
Clinical Psychologist
Seeking psychological services is a courageous first step towards alleviating personal and interpersonal distress. Therefore, I provide the highest quality care to adults (including seniors), couples, and families. My primary therapeutic approach is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) but I also have experience with other evidence-based treatments, including Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and Prolonged Exposure (PE) for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Regardless of the approach and type of service (individual, couple, family), I believe a compassionate therapeutic relationship is essential in creating a safe environment to work collaboratively with clients so they can identify their unique needs and treatment goals.
Over the years, I have provided assessment and treatment in a variety of mental health settings including the Royal Ottawa Hospital, the Rehabilitation Centre, and private practice settings. For 10 years, I held an adjunct faculty position at Briercrest Seminary where I taught modular courses (i.e., Emotionally Focused Therapy; DSM & Psychopharmacology). From 2004 to 2021, I was employed full-time at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre – Youth Psychiatry Program. I held a Clinical Professorship in the School of Psychology at the University of Ottawa and was actively involved in the training and supervision of doctoral students. For three years, I was the Director of Training for The Royal Ottawa's Predoctoral Residency Training Program in Clinical Psychology.
I also have extensive experience in helping couples bring closure to incidents that have damaged their relationship bond. My expertise in couple therapy also extends to distressed family relationships. Using attachment theory as the lens to understand painful interactional patterns, I focus on emotional processing to help family members reconnect with each other in a manner that leads to safe and secure attachments.
To remain current, I participate in continuing education programs through conferences and workshops and reading scientific literature. In addition, I have a keen interest in clinical research that has resulted in the publication of several book chapters and journal articles.

Mother's Mental Health
Registered Social Worker, Psychotherapist
I help mothers to improve their well-being and I am dedicated to mom and baby having a strong bond. I support mothers to work through any issues to create a balanced and content life that is beneficial to mom and a child.
Becoming a mother brings many emotional challenges. Being a mom myself, I understand the struggles many mothers go through. Depression and anxiety during and after pregnancy affect up to 1 in 7 women. Many mothers miss the early signs of depression because they think those are signs of pregnancy-related hormonal changes. These symptoms may be more than depression and sadness and have a negative impact on mom’s everyday functioning.
The loss of a baby is a devastating experience. Attachment to a baby can begin as early as the planning to full pregnancy. By themselves, pregnancy and postpartum are vulnerable periods. There are no public rituals for miscarriage and this grief is rarely publicly recognized. There is a great stigma about abortion in society and although electing to terminate, a mother can experience shame, guilt, despair, sadness, anger and depression.
I offer a safe and non-judgmental space to provide mothers with the support and tools necessary to work through any issues that are a barrier to their well-being.
I am a Master’s trained Registered Social Worker in Ontario and a member of the Canadian Association of Social Workers. I specialised in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy at Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, ON and I am educated in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy Skills by Marsha Linehan. Education in treating Perinatal Loss and Perinatal Mental Health I gained at the Centre of Perinatal Excellence, Australia. I use a caring and client-centred approach.
I work together with mothers to bring calmness and understanding of events that happened and help to move toward a healing process and a better quality of life.

Ef Zin Counsellinr
Registered Social Worker
Jean-Paul Sartre said that "freedom is what you do with what's been done to you", giving the concept of freedom a deeper and more meaningful sense, one that accepts that life involves hardships and trauma, but it also involves the resilience to accept, process and use these experiences in being present and consciously choosing our life paths, discovering who we are and not allowing others to define our essence.
My name is Elena, I'm a Registered Social Worker and Counsellor in the Ottawa area. I offer primarily EMDR therapy but I incorporate Somatic Experiencing (SE) as needed.
Together we will create a safe space for you, built on mutual trust, where you will feel comfortable being and becoming.
Please don't hesitate to contact me.
Remember to give yourself the same grace you give others,
Elena

When we feel truly seen, heard, and accepted, meaningful healing can begin. I believe we each hold inner resilience—sometimes we just need the right space to uncover and nurture it. I’m here to help you explore your story, build self-awareness, and reconnect with yourself. No matter what brings you to therapy, you’ll be met with warmth, acceptance, and hopefulness. Change doesn’t happen all at once, but with reflection and the right tools, therapy can help you find clarity, emotional relief, and lasting growth.
My work is grounded in the belief that healing comes from within, and that you are the expert of your own life. I support clients facing anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem, people-pleasing, attachment wounds, and relationship challenges. I'm passionate about helping clients heal from their past, childhood experiences, and family / relationship dynamics.
My approach is relational and humanistic, integrating psychodynamic, parts work (IFS), emotion-focused and attachment-focused modalities. I offer therapy in-person in Ottawa and virtually across Ontario. If you’re ready to take the next step, I’d be honored to support you.
