Psychotherapist
I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor in Vancouver, BC with a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from Adler University and with additional trainings in Emotion Focused Therapy, Clinical Hypnotherapy, somatic techniques, mindfulness, and yoga. I work with youth and adults facing day to day difficulties, trauma, eating disorders, substance use, depression, suicidality, anxiety, grief, life transitions, and other concerns.
My approach to counselling is rooted in the idea that the body holds knowledge that cannot always be expressed through words. I firmly believe that change is possible through the integration of the body and mind and I aim to work alongside clients to help them gain safety and comfort in their bodies, their relationships, and their lives. Incorporating emotion processing techniques, mindfulness, and body work, I am able to offer a holistic approach to therapy. I believe that all people have potential and deserve the opportunity to be seen and celebrated for who they are. When people feel valued and worthwhile, they can develop the capacity to move through difficult emotions knowing they aren’t alone. My hope is that clients leave our interactions feeling seen, heard, and supported in the venture through this to that.

Counsel Me Vancouver
Registered Clinical Counsellor and Couples Therapist
I grew up in BC just outside of Vancouver and have developed a passion for understanding human emotion and helping people navigate their emotions. I spent many years working at treatment centres, in a correctional facility mental health unit, and at the Royal Mounted Canadian Police force. Through all of these positions, I worked with people dealing with all types of struggles such as addictions, trauma, low self-worth, grief, loss, anxiety, depression, and strained relationships.
I decided to open a private practice in 2012 downtown Vancouver because I had always planned on owning my own business. From there, my business grew as did my experience with helping people sort through their struggles.
I wanted to learn more about couples and marriage therapy so I started training as a Gottman Couples Therapist which is a research based approach to couples counselling. This gave me the tools to really help couples and individuals improve their relationships, overcome gridlocked issues, learn to communicate more effectively and engage in healthy problem solving. It’s really changed the way I work with people when it comes to relationships.

NOTE: During the COVID-19 pandemic, I provide 100% online therapy services, which include both phone as well as video appointments.
When we feel overwhelmed, stressed, or bogged down by difficult situations or circumstances, it can be tough to see where to go, what to think, and what to do. Often what is missing is being able to see the bigger picture. This is among other things what psychologists are trained to provide. Using clinically proven methods in the form of an integrative and comprehensive approach to mental health treatment, I assist clients in identifying and changing what keeps them from realizing their potential. This may involve understanding potential triggers of mental health concerns and learning new strategies to decrease symptoms and facilitate change. No matter what your background is and what culture you identify with, what spiritual or political views you hold, and whatever your sexual orientation is, I am committed to guiding you in your own process of reclaiming health.

First I want you to know it takes a lot of courage to reach out for support. So I want to commend you on taking this first step. My name is Heather Hassenbein and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor and a Professional Art Therapist located in downtown Vancouver, BC.
People seek counselling for a variety of reasons. Sometimes people come in for a quick check-in, others come in for a specific concern, while some are not entirely sure except they know something does not feel right. The bottom line is you do not have to have a major problem or exact reason to meet with a counsellor. A person wanting to make changes or figure things out is reason enough to come in and talk.
I work with teens, adults, and older adults who tend to be empaths and highly sensitive people (HSPs) who experience anxiety, depression, stress, and overwhelming emotions.
I am an approved provider with ICBC, First Nations Health Authority (FNHA), Health Benefits Program: Crisis Intervention Mental Health Program, and the Indian Residential School Resolution Health Support Program (IRS-RHSP).

I strive to create an environment where you aren't mean to yourself. I want to inspire conversations that are grounded in self-acceptance so that you can gain awareness and develop new perspectives.
I tend to work well with what I call "fast brained" people. That's probably because I'm neurodivergent, just like many of my clients. My queer identity has taught me that while some labels are given to us, others are discovered. I would love to sit down with you and not only help you feel seen, but help you see yourself for who you are.

Family Systems Therapist
"Each of us inherits a degree of maturity, or differentiation of self, from what was available in the family we grew up in. The two key variables to how much maturity we start adulthood with are the amount of relationship maturity in our family of origin and how much anxious focus we received within that family," - Dr. Jenny Brown.
The unique feature of my practice as a Clinical Counsellor is the lens through which I think about and consider life's challenges. In my practice, I almost exclusively use a family systems approach to support clients with issues related to mental and physical health, relationships, family, and even career issues. I work with individuals, couples and families. My goal for working with clients is always to help them think differently about their problems, consider their underlying anxieties and address the barriers they face to thoughtful decisions and open communication. And maybe even to find a little humour along the way! My clients can benefit from both short-term and long-term therapy, depending on their goals and needs.
I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (#15198) in the province of British Columbia. My educational background is in social and behavioural health sciences, with PhD-level training from the University of Victoria and a Masters in Public Health from the University of Toronto. In my preparation to enter the field of Couple and Family Therapy, I halso completed three years of advanced post-graduate clinical training in Bowen Family Systems Therapy.
Prior to opening my private practice in January of 2018, I spent 10 years working as a public health researcher and consultant in the area of substance use in young adults with the University of Victoria's Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research. I then began my clinical training and internship in Couple and Family Therapy with Living Systems Counselling in 2014. After several years of intensive training and internship, I was invited to join Living Systems as a Clinical Associate. At the time, I was also pursuing PhD studies at the University of Victoria looking at the application of family systems theories to public health practice in Victoria, BC.
Following the sudden death of my father in 2016 to a genetically-driven cancer, I gained my own clarity on my true path, which meant leaving my PhD to pursue counselling full-time in Vancouver. I have also become an advocate for the awareness of genetic cancers for both men and women in the BC Jewish Community and in 2018, co-founded the BRCAinBC initiative with my mother, Jane, in memory of my late father, Geoff.
I am passionate about the goals of health and wellbeing for all. My work with both clients and larger organizations continues to focus on improving access to the information we all need to find our own solutions in our life journeys. Won't you join me!

Alejs Lluis Gonzalez Counselling
Counsellor
Hello! I’m Alejs, pronounced ‘Alex’. I work with young adults and adults struggling with a broad range of challenges including anxiety, depression, childhood trauma, grief and loss, sustaining healthy relationships, sexualized violence, gender identity (incl. HRT assessments) and sexuality.
My genuine warmth, humour, care, and curiosity play a big role in my counselling approach. It’s important to me that my clients feel held and well-supported when digging into difficult themes. I want to help clients gain confidence and learn practical approaches to exploring the places and parts of themselves where they feel stuck or lost. My relationally-oriented somatic approach to psychotherapy is informed by emergent research on attachment and neurophysiology. Clients who work with me can expect a curious invitation to reconnect and attend to the wisdom inherent in the body. My goal is to support clients in finding creative ways to make sense of and move through distressing experiences related to trauma and/or stresses of daily living.
Reaching out is a brave step towards a better relationship with yourself and your communities. Counselling can help guide you towards a deeper, more embodied sense of confidence and agency in your life. It is common for the process to feel vulnerable and uncomfortable. I will meet you at whatever stage you are at in your personal process.

At Nexus, I will work with you within the context of a nonjudgmental, collaborative and healing therapeutic relationship to parse out and clearly see the interwoven links and connections that contribute to how you experience, perceive and interpret life's challenges, difficulties and obstacles. Since 2014, I have amassed thousands of clinical hours working with adults including men, women, LGBTQ community, veterans and first responders affected by various types of trauma. The majority of this work has focused on individuals affected by Dissociative Disorders and Complex PTSD.
Unique to my work with clients is the belief that each individual is just that - an individual. As such, my approach to working with clients is integrative drawing on multiple tools and techniques from various psychological frameworks and philosophies - all of which are practiced from a Feminist, Cultural-Relational perspective.

The Centre for Gay Counselling
Registered Clinical Counsellor
Are you a gay man who is overwhelmed by the intensity of your feelings? Do certain situations feel triggering or remind you of a past trauma? It can feel unbearable when you’re just trying to keep it together, and hoping nobody notices when you start breathing rapidly, sweating, or shaking. Even between intense moments, there can be a low-level anxiety that feels like it’s always lurking, ready to take over at any time. Not to mention the shame about not feeling in control of your responses. The good news is that there are specific skills that can be learned to listen to your emotions and think about your past in a whole new way.
To start, we’ll create a customized plan for your counselling. Often, I’ll first teach you some skills for understanding and managing your emotions so that you feel more in control and grounded early on. We’ll also explore your history so that we can do more advanced therapeutic work that focuses on addressing your unique challenges and achieving your goals.
I believe gay men have inherent worth, and that we deserve fulfilling lives. I help fellow gay men just like you understand their emotions better, heal from past trauma, and grow their sense of self-worth so that they can enjoy living fully as themselves. Visit my website today and book your free 15 minute consultation call to get started.

I believe the foundation of therapy is the relationship. I have a background in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) and psychodynamic psychotherapy. Usually, I integrate between treatment approaches as I've found that one approach usually doens't have all the answers.
I help patients with problems with emotions (e.g., depression, anxiety, trauma and complex trauma) relationships (e.g., relationship anxiety, infidelity, anger), personality disorders (e.g., avoidant personality, borderline personality) and emotion-based behaviours (e.g., non-suicidal self-injury, OCD, binge-eating).

I believe we are all on our own individual, unique personal journey through life.
There is no one right way to heal or one single approach to therapy. I offer both in person and virtual/telephone sessions.
Each session is tailored to where the client is at in the moment and from the belief that somewhere in all of us, no matter how deeply we have been wounded, we have the resources we need to heal.
I am a Vancouver based Counsellor and Psychotherapist in Private Practice with over 22 years of extensive clinical experience offering short and long term counselling and psychotherapy to individuals, couples and families from a deeply compassionate, collaborative, client centred and relational perspective using various forms of therapy to empower clients to emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually thrive.
I work with all ages on any issues that are getting in the way of the client experiencing life to its fullest in the very personal way they want to live.
My guiding principles of practice are safety, honesty, unconditional acceptance, inclusivity, empathy and an understanding that healing comes through connection. My additional training in Somatic Psychotherapy has led me to a trauma informed, body centred approach with the understanding that the body holds the information we need to heal.
