Pause Psychology & Counselling
Registered Psychologist
My name is Courtney Schonauer, I am a registered psychologist with over 10 years experience. I have been fortunate to have worked in many different settings to build and tailor my expertise to form a skill set I bring to my private practice.
It is my belief that counselling needs to be fit to the client infront of me and their unique needs. Therapy sessions should be tailored to how each client processes and understands change to make the therapy most beneficial.
It is most important that my client's feel comfortable and safe so they can bring honesty and transparency to our sessions to receive the most benefit from the counselling experience. I work collaboratively with my clients to create a trusting and comfortable space.
To get more information about me and my practice please visit my website or feel free to contact me and I will gladly answer any questions or concerns you have.

Welcome!
My approach to therapy is collaborative and is inspired by the unique challenges, strengths and stories you bring into each session. Some areas I can support you with include understanding and managing emotions more effectively, moving from self-criticism to self-compassion, exploring values and how to live by them, and processing difficult events. My areas of interest include but are not limited to self-esteem, stress, anxiety, depression, life transitions, body image concerns, disordered eating, and cultural and spiritual exploration.
To help you reach your potential, I draw from various therapeutic approaches supported by research, including Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, CBT, DBT. My goal is to create an environment where you can show up, feel safe and empowered.
Meeting a new therapist and asking for help is an act of courage. You can expect inclusivity, compassion, empathy, and a little humour during our time together.
Please call or send an email to find out if working with me might be a good fit for you.
I look forward to meeting you!

Registered Psychologist, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS-C)
I take a collaborative approach to therapy, and my goal is to create a space where my clients feel safe, accepted, validated and supported. Therapy is tailored to each individual's needs, goals, and values. The main types of therapy I use in my practice are, DBT, CBT and ACT.
Through therapy, you can learn to understand and cope with difficult emotions, problem-solve challenging situations, change ineffective behaviour patterns, gain new perspectives on your thoughts, strengthen and build meaningful relationships, and forge the path towards the life you want to live.
Individual Therapy
The therapy styles that I use are evidence-based and are supported by empirical research. These styles include Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. These styles allow me to balance my client's goals towards change and acceptance.
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
DBT is a style of therapy that balances the ideas of change and acceptance and helps clients work towards creating a life worth living. It emphasizes validation and includes acquiring skills from the areas of mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Eating Disorder Treatment
Eating disorder treatment includes strategies from DBT, CBT and ACT. Therapy is tailored to the client's individual needs and goals. Additional philosophies that inform my practice are the Health at Every Size paradigm, mindfulness and intuitive eating principles.
